Bernard Cusson is facing murder charges in connection with the killing of Joseph Bottis, age 39, at the Webster Commons Plaza in the early morning hours of June 17, Webster Police said on Facebook.
Bottis was known to the Webster community as "Can Man Joe," because he spent his days collecting cans and talking with the local community, according to his obituary.
"Joe loved Webster very much," his brother Jacob Luckhart said in a GoFundMe campaign. "Even while he was homeless, he did his part to care for and clean up the community."
"Our thoughts are with the Bottis family as they continue to mourn their loss," Webster Police said. "While we know that the charging of Cusson cannot replace Joseph, we hope it helps move them closer to a sense of closure."
Cusson is being held without bail on a previous firearms charged, police said. He is expected to be arraigned on the charge of murder on July 19.
